Kyle Walker: New Man City contract an easy decision after trophy haul

Kyle Walker claims it was an "easy decision" to commit his future to Manchester City after signing a two-year extension with the Premier League champions.

The England defender is set to find his position under more threat than ever as Pep Guardiola targets Juventus right-back Joao Cancelo this summer.

But Walker – who was fully aware of City’s plans to provide him with greater competition – is determined to fight for his place and remain a pivotal part of Guardiola’s plans.

“I’m thrilled to have signed a new deal,” he said after committing himself to the Etihad until 2024. “Playing for City has been everything I’d hoped it would be and more.

“It was an easy decision. I want to be competing for trophies, playing at the highest level, and I feel I have improved hugely as a player during my tme here.

“The club’s vision – both on and of the pitch – matches mine perfectly and I’m looking forward to spending the next five years here, hopefully winning more silverware.”

Walker’s new deal is believed to be worth close to £180,000-a-week if performance-related bonuses are met.

But the 29-year-old knows his position will be far from guaranteed if Cancelo arrives from Juventus.

Danilo will be allowed to leave during this window after growing frustrated with his lack of first-team football – but Portugal international Cancelo is expected to provide far greater competition.

The 25-year-old will be given the opportunity to establish himself as City’s first choice right-back if he swaps Turin for the Etihad.

But he will have a fight on his hands to displace Walker, who has enjoyed after two trophy-laden years with the Premier League champions.

The former Tottenham defender has been pivotal to Guardiola’s five domestic trophies during that time.

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “We are delighted to have Kyle here for a further two years.

“His strength, speed and ability have been vital to our accomplishments. He is a key member of the squad.

“His experience is invaluable, particularly to the younger members of the team, and his contribution will be crucial in our efforts for continued success.”

Walker arrived in a deal worth an initial £45m – but it’s believed that figure has risen beyond £50m due to performance-related add-ons.
