Man City in talks over new 12-month contract for Vincent Kompany despite injury issues

Manchester City are ready to hand Vincent Kompany a new contract – regardless of his injury woes.

The Belgium international – who is a free agent at the end of the season - is currently in talks over a new deal, which is expected to see him sign on for another 12 months.

Pep Guardiola is determined to keep the club captain at the Etihad, despite his ongoing fitness concerns.

It is felt Kompany’s influence within the dressing room remains so valuable that City are prepared to look beyond the injuries, which have ravaged the last four years of his career.

He has been reduced to just eight Premier League starts this campaign after seeing John Stones and Aymeric Laporte establish themselves as Guardiola’s first-choice pairing.

But the 32-year-old has shown glimpses of being able to produce his finest form – most notably with an outstanding performance against Liverpool in January.

He then broke down with a calf problem just 15 minutes into his next training session after that 2-1 win, which saw him sidelined for another six weeks.

Kompany – who will have his testimonial during the summer – is expected to take a pay cut to stay on at the club and faces the potential of being pushed further down the pecking order.

Guardiola plans to bring in as many as four new players this summer, with a centre-back among his targets.

Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt is one of the defenders identified by the Catalan as an ideal fit for City.
