The Premier League have explained why Anthony Martial was not awarded a penalty during Manchester United's clash against Bournemouth at Vitality Stadium.

Martial went down in the Bournemouth penalty area 33 minutes into the rain-soaked match on the south coast, prompting a furious reaction from Cherries midfielder Jefferson Lerma.

Lerma's anger with Martial sparked a melee between both sets of players, with referee Chris Kavanagh eventually booking both Lerma and United midfielder Fred.

Kavanagh had not awarded a penalty to United, and following a VAR review, play continued with a corner to the visitors.

Replays showed there was contact between Martial and Lerma before the Bournemouth player got the ball, and United appeared to question the decision by tweeting a picture of the tackle with an emoji of a questioning face.

However, the Premier League also tweeted via their official Twitter account soon afterwards to explain why a potential spot-kick was not awarded despite a VAR review of the incident.

"In the first half, Anthony Martial went down under pressure in the AFC Bournemouth penalty area but Chris Kavanagh deemed it no penalty," the statement read.

"The VAR looked at the incident and under the protocols decided there was no clear and obvious error so the referee's decision stood".

The decision proved to be costly for United for the rest of the half as Josh King scored on the stroke of half-time to send Bournemouth in 1-0 up at the interval.
