You know things are going wrong at Manchester United when you can't even rely on Juan Mata to put a brave face on things.

Despite having played for Chelsea and United, Mata is one of the most well-loved footballers in the English game, with many a neutral fan declaring a soft spot for the diminutive playmaker due to his cultured style of play and irrepressible smile.

But Mata's blog posts have become increasingly apologetic towards United fans in recent weeks, and the Spanish playmaker has seemingly run out of patience after Sunday's disastrous 1-1 draw at rock-bottom Huddersfield Town.

That result means United will be playing Europa League football next season, though Mata may well be moving on with his contract expiring this summer and no new deal on the horizon.

Writing on his blog 'One Hour Behind', Mata posted a simple message which read: "You deserve better. No more words needed."

United fans reacted to the blog by declaring that Mata 'deserves better', with one Twitter user (@SharonRoper) replying: "A classy guy who obviously feels just as bad as we do. Hope to see you in our team next season".
