David de Gea tried to play through the injury that could rule him out of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

De Gea started for Spain in their Euro 2020 qualifier against Sweden in Stockholm on Tuesday night, but was replaced on the hour-mark after appearing to suffer a hamstring problem in his right leg.

His withdrawal immediately sparked fears he will miss the visit of Liverpool on Sunday with United in desperate need of a positive result against their arch-rivals after as wretched run of results.

A statement released by United did little to ease those concerns with an update on de Gea’s fitness not expected until Friday when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s holds his pre-match press conference.

But speaking after Spain’s 1-1 draw against Sweden, La Rojo boss Robert Moreno revealed de Gea initially picked up the problem in the first-half of the match and attempted to play on.

"He had pain in the abductor muscle but he received treatment at half-time and wanted to keep playing," said Moreno. "He gave us his word, but in the end he couldn't continue."

De Gea’s absence could see Sergio Romero start in goal when league leaders Liverpool come to Old Trafford.
