Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praise on Scott McTominay, and believes that the midfielder has a bright future as a leader at Manchester United.

McTominay, 22, was not necessarily regarded as one of the brightest prospects within the United academy, but has has enjoyed a stunning rise - both literally and figuratively.

At the beginning of 2015, McTominay stood at 5ft, 6ins - but a huge growth spurt now sees the Scot standing at 6ft, 4ins, with the added benefit of having had to develop the technical side of his game against larger opponents.

With Paul Pogba suffering from both a dip in form and injuries this year, McTominay is now arguably the first name on the teamsheet in Solskjaer's midfield, and has developed a promising understanding with Fred in recent weeks.

Initially deployed as a holding midfielder to screen the defence, McTominay has begun to add goals to his game with efforts from outside the box against Arsenal and Norwich in recent weeks.

The youngster has also developed something of a cult following among United fans for his passionate goal celebrations - even when he hasn't scored himself.

With McTominay impressing once again in the 2-1 Carabao Cup win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, Solskjaer believes he has a fine talent on his hands.

"Scott's a leader, he’s a Man United boy, he’s come through the ranks," Solskjaer said.

"You can tell he used to be a striker with the goal he scored against Norwich on the half-turn and he’s developing into a very good midfielder."

McTominay and Fred started four of United's six games in October, and Solskjaer added of the pair: "[McTominay] has been excellent and now him and Fred have a good relationship.

"They’re playing well together. They did it last season - there were quite a few games where they played well together when we had some injuries, like PSG and Arsenal.

"Now they’re working as a pair, but Scotty [in particular] has been excellent."
