Marcus Thuram takes knee after goal celebration as George Floyd protests sweep America

1/10

Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram marked his goal in Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with Union Berlin by ‘taking a knee’, as protests against racial injustice and police brutality continue around the world.

The gesture has become a symbol in the fight for equality ever since some NFL players, led by Colin Kaepernick, began kneeling during the pre-game national anthem in 2016.

The current wave of protests sweeping across the US began after an unarmed black man, George Floyd, was killed whilst being detained by a Minneapolis police officer.

Video footage emerged showing the officer – who has since been charged with murder – kneeling on Floyd’s neck as he struggled for breath.

The demonstrations have spread beyond the United States, with thousands gathering in London’s Trafalgar Square and near the US Embassy.

Thuram, who is the son of France legend Lilian, initially celebrated his strike with teammates before pausing to make the poignant gesture.
