Mario Balotelli’s goal against Swansea was “a relief for everyone” at Liverpool, Dejan Lovren has admitted.

Balotelli was on course to make it nine games without scoring for the Reds before his late goal in the League Cup on Tuesday night sparked a comeback.

Liverpool went on to snatch a 2-1 victory against Garry Monk’s side, and Lovren, who grabbed the winner, said after the match he had every confidence Balotelli would start scoring soon.

“I think it’s a relief for everyone but I was sure that Mario would score today or tomorrow so it was just a [matter of] time,” Lovren told Sky Sports.

“Everyone has confidence in Mario, he’s working very hard in training, so it will come with time.

“When you score a goal all the heavy weight that was on your shoulders [is lifted] and I think now his time will come.”

Lovren added: “It was a tough game but we showed our character today.

“I think we played better than the last two games and 100 per cent we deserved this win today.”
