Mark Hughes calls for more consistency

11 April 2012

Fulham manager Mark Hughes today revealed his frustration with refereeing inconsistencies after Mousa Dembele was ruled out for three weeks following a foul by Stoke's Andy Wilkinson.

The striker damaged ankle ligaments in a challenge Hughes called "ridiculous" in their midweek Carling Cup defeat and he will return next month.

And Hughes has told referees that rather than concentrating on innocuous fouls they need to focus on dismissing players who endanger careers.

"The way the game is refereed now there are a lot of innocuous challenges that are pulled up and then the potentially dangerous tackles are missed," said the Welshman, whose side play Everton at Craven Cottage tomorrow.

"Officials need to look at that. You can't legislate for a player doing something that could be damaging to a fellow professional."
