Javier Mascherano has agreed a four-year contract extension with Barcelona, in a deal that will expire in June 2018.
The former Liverpool player, who can play in midfield or in central defence, had been linked with a move away from the Catalan giants, with Napoli among the clubs said to be interested.
But the announcement this evening ends that speculation and will see the 29-year-old on an improved contract with a buyout clause of €100million.
The statement on the club's official website said: "FC Barcelona announces that it has reached an agreement with Javier Mascherano for the improvement and extension of his contract for the next four years, until 30 June 2018, plus an optional season. His buyout clause will be €100m."
Mascherano, who joined Barcelona from 2010 in Liverpool, has made 184 appearances for the Spanish club, including 44 in the 2013-14 campaign.
Signed as a defensive midfielder, the Argentine was converted into a central defender by Pep Guardiola and has won eight major honours with the Catalans, including two Liga titles and the 2011 Champions League.
There was speculation that Mascherano would be sold by new manager Luis Enrique as part of his rebuilding of the squad having taken over from Gerardo Martino at the end of the season.
The midfielder, who also played in the Premier League with West Ham, will now focus on the World Cup where he is set to play an important role for Argentina.
