Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Moussa Sissoko as one of Tottenham’s most important players.
Sissoko has featured in all but one of Spurs’ 24 League matches this season and all six Champions League group games but remains an unloved figure among fans.
Sections of the away end appeared to boo when Heung-Min Son, rather than Sissoko, was replaced by Erik Lamela in Sunday’s frustrating 1-1 draw at Southampton but Pochettino says the France international is crucial to the way he wants Spurs to play.
“You have to give the credit to him because he is the only player who provides balance in those transitions - offensive to defensive, defensive to offensive - in the team,” Pochettino said.
“There is no other player in the team who can provide that. This is the best quality he provides to the team, who need that balance nowadays. He has been one of our most important players.”
Sissoko joined Spurs from Newcastle United for a then-club record £30million in 2016 but started just eight League games last season - without scoring - and was publicly criticised by Pochettino for his lack of effort.
Pochettino believes a “myth” has been created around Sissoko after a poor maiden season at Spurs and says the 28-year-old is still suffering from a negative first impression.
“We create myths,” the boss said. “Sometimes you think a way about someone because of first impressions and then they stick forever. I like that you give credit to him because he is doing very well.”
