Mauricio Pochettino insists Wembley Stadium pitch is 'no excuse' for 'poor' Tottenham Champions League displays

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has refused to blame playing at Wembley for his side's chastening 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

Spurs went into the game aiming to close in on a place in the knock-out stages but Kevin Kampl's 66th minute winner has ensured they will face a battle to avoid an early exit from Europe's primary club competition.

Pochettino's side produced an insipid performance under the arch and have dropped to third place in Group E with just two games left to play.

Another record crowd packed into the national stadium to see Spurs in action and the Argentine is adamant his players are to blame for the poor 'home' results rather than the location of the fixtures.

"I'm disappointed with the result," Pochettino told BT Sport. "I think that [there's] nothing to say about Wembley - it's about that we were poor and it's true maybe if we analyse the game we created the same chances [as Leverkusen], maybe more.

"We have the possession but the feeling always was that it was difficult to score.

"The feeling was that we don't feel freedom to play and show our real quality and then we cannot [make] excuses today and after two games on Wembley.

"Both games we were poor and we need to show more. The truth is that we were poor in both games."

Spurs have little time to dwell on tonight's disappointment as they travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Pochettino's side will fall six points off the title pace if they lose to their arch rivals, having failed to win a game since beating Manchester City a month ago.
