Mauricio Pochettino warned Tottenham they cannot afford any mistakes next season if they want to win the title.

Spurs are guaranteed to finish second – their highest place in the Premier League era – this term but may rue their poor form last autumn.

After beating Manchester City 2-0 on October 2, Pochettino’s team had to wait until November 19 for their next league victory, a last-gasp 3-2 success over West Ham.

If Spurs are to succeed Chelsea as champions in 2017-18, Pochettino knows there can be no repeat.

He said: “It is about being more competitive next season. In October and November we dropped a lot of points and it was difficult to catch Chelsea.

“Our performance at the time was not good enough. So we need to get the team more consistent during the whole season. Because if you are not, you cannot catch teams like Chelsea.

“Now it is a moment to be calm and analyse properly. We analyse everything - every match, every training session.

"So now it is time for us to look at it and find a way to fix the team, find better tools to improve in our methods and the way that we handle and manage the team.

“When you finish second, it is something you have to improve. You want to win and next season will be different.

"All of our enemies and opponents will try to improve their squads. In life you cannot stay happy with what you are doing now. “

Pochettino will also seek to improve the squad during the summer.

Although Spurs improved on last season’s third-place finish, Victor Wanyama was the only one of the new signings who made an important impact.

Pochettino added: “You need to try to improve, improve, improve.

"You need to find the way to inspire them and push them further in their performance, to improve our methods and then, to try to find more quality and to find the types of player that can help us play better next season.”
