Messi-Tevez partnership renewed for Argentina v Mexico friendly

Old pals: Tevez and Messi in action together in 2010

Lionel Messi and Carlos Tevez are set to start an Argentina match together for the first time since the 2010 World Cup tonight.

The pair have not started alongside each other for five years but coach Gerardo Martino is poised to play them in a friendly against Mexico in Dallas.

Tevez has recently returned to the Argentina set-up after four years in the international wilderness under former coach Alejandro Sabella.

The former West Ham forward was recalled by Martino last November but has only made one start.

Diego Maradona was the last Argentina coach to play Messi alongside Tevez, in the 2010 last eight tie when they were beaten 4-0 by Germany in Cape Town.

Messi came off the bench to score twice as Argentina beat Bolivia 7-0 on Friday to take his Argentina tally to 48, just six short of Gabriel Batistuta’s record of 54.

Tevez and Messi are set to start in attack alongside exciting Atletico Madrid talent Angel Correa, who made his debut against Bolivia.

“We know the crowds are keen to see Lionel and we do not turn a blind eye to that,” said Martino. “But we also have to look after the players’ bodies.”
