Mesut Ozil was "let down" by his Arsenal team-mates during last month's 5-1 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, according to Oliver Bierhoff.

The Gunners travelled to Bavaria aiming to secure a positive result against Carlo Ancelotti's side but collapsed during the second-half and are now highly unlikely to progress to the quarter-finals.

None of Arsene Wenger's players covered themselves in glory but Ozil was singled out for criticism, having struggled to influence proceedings on a return to his homeland.

The German midfielder is often a key figure in Arsenal's attacking play but created just one chance at the Allianz Arena as the visitors finished the game with just 26% of possession.

However, Bierhoff is adamant Ozil did not receive enough support from those around him, which meant he was unable to have a positive impact.

Bierhoff told Sport Bild: "If I look at Ozil, who was singled out following the 5-1 loss to Bayern, in that match there was not much support for a player like Mesut, who lives on his footballing qualities.

"The team let him down a bit."

Arsenal face Liverpool in a crucial Premier League fixture on Saturday evening before they can turn their attention to the second-leg against Bayern.

The Gunners have failed to progress further than the last-16 since 2010, which has become a source of frustration among sections of the north London club's fanbase.
