Mousa Dembele: Tottenham's ability to switch formations gives us an 'advantage'

Tottenham's ability to switch between formations during a game gives them an advantage over other Premier League sides, according to Mousa Dembele.

Mauricio Pochettino has set his team up with a three-man defence in recent weeks and did so again for the weekend's trip to Burnley.

But early injuries to central midfielders Victor Wanyama and Harry Winks forced the Argentine coach to reshuffle his pack for the second half.

Dembele was introduced as a substitute and Eric Dier was pushed into midfield as Spurs reverted to a 4-2-3-1 system.

The tactical tweak did not knock the north Londoners off their stride, with goals from Dier and Heung-min Son helping to cut Chelsea's lead at the top of the table to seven points.

Few sides can make such alterations so seamlessly and Dembele is adamant versatility is a key weapon to possess.

“We’ve played in different formations and that’s an advantage for us. We knew how to play and we adapted very quickly," Dembele told Tottenham's official website.

“The mentality is there and now we all hope for the biggest things.

"We have nine games to go, it’s very positive and this win is so important because not many teams win at Burnley."

Dier and Dembele often played alongside eachother in midfield last season but the former's spell in defence, plus excellent Wanyama's form, has put their partnership on hold.

However, the duo could be paired together for Wednesday's trip to Swansea and Dembele has praised the stellar options Spurs have at their disposal in the centre of the park.

“He’s a very good player and everyone knows that. We work well together, he’s an amazing player.

"He does it in midfield, in defence and it’s so easy for him to adapt - but of course it’s not easy at all. No matter who plays, we have a solid team,” added the Belgian.
