On the move: Joey Barton (left, playing for Newcastle) appears set to join QPR

Queens Park Rangers manager Neil Warnock was today pushing through a deal to sign Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

The former Crystal Palace boss said: "I know he appreciates the offer we've made him but I hope Joey doesn't think we're going to pay him the figures some of the papers have linked him with this morning!"

Warnock claimed he had not gone to bed until 1am this morning, fielding calls from agents and clubs and said: "I'd like to bring in another four or five by the Wednesday night deadline.

"I've always liked Joey and tried to sign him a couple of times, once at Sheffield United.

"Managers either like a player or they don't - with Joey, I like him."

Warnock added: "I'd like to bring in a couple before the weekend if I could. I'm cracking on with it today."

However, there was no new bid for West Ham's Scott Parker after an initial bid of £4million was rejected.

Warnock said: "We've identified the areas where we need to improve but I want to get Joey finished before thinking of anyone else."
