In less than 36 hours the transfer window will have slammed shut and it seems some Premier League clubs’ fingers are firmly hovering over the panic button.

That does, at the very least, suggest we may at last reach some form of conclusion in the interminable Saido Berahino saga.

Leading the suitors appear to be Newcastle United, desperate to compliment the creativity of Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend with a reliable striker for the first time since Papiss Cisse’s form summarily deserted him sometime in mid-2012.

Reports today suggest that they are willing to smash their transfer record, once paid for the likes of Michael Owen and Alan Shearer, to bring Berahino in.
