Tottenham suffered their worst-ever start to a Premier League game in a massacre at the hands of Newcastle.

The five goals scored within 21 minutes by the Toon was the most conceded by Spurs in such a match, and only the second time a team had done so in the competition’s history.

Manchester City were the last, putting five past Watford in September 2019.

Newcastle fans have to go back to 2010 for the last time a team had scored three in the first nine minutes, something City also achieved back in 2010 against Burnley.

Tottenham hadn’t conceded five in an away game since a thrashing at the hands of Newcastle seven years ago.

It all began in the first minute when Joelinton strolled into the box and saw his shot tamely parried by Hugo Lloris, allowing Jacob Murphy to slot home only 61 seconds into the game.

Joelinton darted in behind a lame offside trap for 2-0 before Murphy slammed home a third from range after nine minutes.

Spurs had never been three down so early on in a Premier League game and yet it got worse as Alexander Isak ran at goal 19 minutes in, firing low and hard past Lloris.

A carbon-copy strike from the Swede two minutes later compounded the mess Spurs had gotten themselves in.

Davinson Sanchez came off the bench to introduce a sense of calm, the back-five restored with the game lost.

Harry Kane’s consolation early in the second half was wiped out by Callum Wilson scoring Newacstle’s sixth, with his first touch off the bench.
