Nigel Pearson has emerged a serious contender to take over at Watford.

The former Leicester City manager has been interviewed for the vacant job at Vicarage Road this week and is in the frame to succeed Quique Sanchez Flores.

Pearson, 56, has been out of work since being sacked by Leuven in Belgium in February.

He led Leicester to survival in 2015 after they had been bottom of the table at Christmas. With Watford currently 20th, seven points from safety, that achievement appeals to the Hornets.

Pearson (left) had two spells at Leicester and time in charge at Southampton, Hull and Derby.

Owner Gino Pozzo has never hired an English manager since buying Watford in 2012. Caretaker Hayden Mullins will be in charge for tomorrow’s home game against Crystal Palace but Watford want to have a new manager in place for their trip to Liverpool next Saturday.
