Roy Hodgson praised Jack Wilshere for "taking over the midfield" as the Arsenal manager turned England's Euro 2016 qualifier around in the second half.

Two spectacular goals from the 23-year-old gave England the lead after they slipped behind to Slovenia in the first half and Hodgson praised his impact, telling BBC Sport the second was "not just any old goal".

"They weren't exactly tap-ins! Both were fantastic and Jack took over the midfield in the second half. That was good to see."

Wilshere capped an outstanding personal performance with the strikes as he excelled in a deep-lying role. The goals were his first in 28 appearances for his country and the Gunners star admitted that his international scoring breakthrough had been "a long time coming".

"It's obviously nice to get my first goals for England," he told the BBC. "They have been a long time coming. I probably wouldn't have had a shot for the second one if I hadn't already scored, but after I'd scored one I had more confidence.

"I have said that I need to score more goals, it is something I need to add to my game. Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes have done that for England."

Phil Jones' half-time withdrawal in favour of Adam Lallana, with Jordan Henderson moving to right back, sparked the comeback and Hodgson praised his players for embracing the tactical changes, as well as offering sympathy for reserve defender Nathaniel Clyne.

"Jordan Henderson did very well at right-back, we were thinking that we would be limiting our options if we replaced Phil Jones with another defender," he said. "It was harsh on Nathaniel Clyne, he doesn't deserve that, but it was the best way to get Adam Lallana on.

"Luckily both moves worked out well, we dominated the game totally for long periods."
