Former Tottenham defender Justin Edinburgh has emerged as an unlikely candidate for the manager’s Aston Villa job.

Edinburgh’s one-time team-mate Tim Sherwood was removed from the role after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea, having spent a mere eight months at the helm. In that time he took Villa to an FA Cup Final but a disastrous record of just one win from their opening 10 games saw him lose his job.

Remi Garde remains the current favourite to take over but the odds of Gillingham manager Edinburgh dramatically fell in recent hours, from 66/1 to just 4/1 according to Bet Victor.

He now sits at 12/1, with the likes of David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Gus Poyet priced lower than him.

The former Spurs full-back, who made over 200 appearances for the club between 1990 and 2000, has had a bright start to his managerial career. He guided Newport County to the Football League before taking the step up to Gillingham, currently top of League One.

On departing Villa Sherwood said: “I knew when I took on the role that it would be a big challenge but it proved to be one I greatly enjoyed and I know I have learned a lot from this experience.

Selected Odds

Remi Garde - 8/13
David Moyes - 6/1
Nigel Pearson - 6/1
Brendan Rodgers - 8/1
Gus Poyet - 8/1
Justin Edinburgh - 12/1
Sean Dyche - 25/1
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - 66/1

“The initial priority was to stay in the Premier League but beating Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley and then leading the team out for the final was an achievement and experience I will treasure for the rest of my career.”

Sherwood and Edinburgh undertook their Uefa Pro Licence course together earlier this year.
