Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was involved in a comical gaffe during their game with Cardiff on Saturday which may have cost the Gunners a goal.

With the score at 0-0 on 15 minutes, the club’s record signing Mesut Ozil flicked a through ball into the Gunner’s in-form striker.

However, with only Bluebirds goalkeeper Marshall in front of him, he checked his run anticipating an offside flag. Unfortunately for the Frenchman the assistant referee had accurately deemed the forward to be onside.

By the time Giroud realised he could play on, defender Steven Caulker had run back and put in a block, as the forward, who has hit 27 goals in only 54 starts for the north Londoners, tried to take the ball around Marshall in vain.

Thankfully for Giroud, Cardiff City old boy Aaron Ramsey netted soon afterwards. The Caerphilly-born 22-year-old, who was afforded a good reception by home fans on his return to South Wales, struck his second and Arsenal’s third on 90 minutes.

Mathieu Flamini notched the visitor's second in the 86th minute, which was also his first goal for the club since January 2008.

The comprehensive 3-0 victory saw Arsenal move seven points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League table with 31 points.
