Serge Gnabry has not been given the opportunities at Arsenal that his performances at the Olympics merit, according to his national team coach Horst Hrubesch.

The 21-year-old winger has been Germany’s star man of the tournament so far, netting his second and third goals of the competition in a 3-3 draw with South Korea, saving a point from Hrubesch’s side with an injury-time free-kick.

Since first breaking into the Arsenal team at 17 years of age injuries have cruelly delayed Gnabry’s progress, whilst a loan spell at West Brom at the start of last season was wasted as Tony Pulis claimed the winger was “not at the level” he required.

Gnabry spent the second half of last season in the Arsenal Under-21s and has not made a first team appearance under Arsene Wenger since March 2014, when he damaged his knee in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich. It is not a situation that makes sense to Hrubesch.

“Over the last two years he wasn’t always fully fit,” the German Olympic coach told reporters. “What annoys me is that people at his club have never given him enough trust during that time.

“And you can see now what an important player he can be and at what level he can play at. He showed that to everyone and hopefully he will now get the opportunities at his club to play in that position.”

As for Gnabry himself, he offered no such rebuke to Wenger, but vowed to get into his club manager’s consideration when he returns to England.

“I’ve had a couple of very difficult seasons and was injured for a long time,” Gnabry said. “Now I feel nearly fully fit again, had a good pre-season at Arsenal and played two good games here in Rio.

“I hope that things carry on like this for me. I try to help the team, that’s why I’m here.”
