Opening-day win was just for starters, claims Zola

Gianfranco Zola believes Saturday’s victory over Crystal Palace proved Watford’s potential in the Championship this season — but insists there is more to come ahead of tonight’s home game against Ipswich.

A last-minute goal from Matej Vydra ensured a 3-2 opening-day win at Selhurst Park and the Watford boss, who replaced Sean Dyche last month, claims there is still room from improvement.

“Obviously we know that we have a few things to work on and improve upon,” said Zola (above).

“I believe there’s a lot to come from this team. The win gives us a lot of confidence, for sure, and it gives us something to think about.

“I’m sure we can be much better than we were on Saturday. The type of football we are trying to play is quite expansive, therefore the players’ condition must be at the top all the time.”

Crystal Palace manager Dougie Freedman welcomes back strikers Glenn Murray and Jermaine Easter into the squad for tonight’s trip to Bristol City but is still without injured captain Paddy McCarthy.

Charlton, who marked their return to the Championship with an impressive 1-1 draw with Birmingham at the weekend, host promotion hopefuls Leicester.

Ahead of tonight’s game at the Valley, manager Chris Powell said: “We should have come away with a win but the result is still a real confidence boost for the players and it gives them a belief in themselves that they can perform in the Championship.”

Millwall travel to Peterborough with manager Kenny Jackett demanding a better defensive display following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against Blackpool.

“Defensively we are still not settled yet and have to work at passing out from the back better,” he said. “I am certainly looking for improvements in that respect.”
