Panama international midfielder Amilcar Henriquez has been shot and killed in his home province of Colon.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who had 75 caps for his country, was reportedly shot by a gunman when leaving his home. He was taken to hospital, but later died.

The Panama Football Federation (FEPAFUT) confirmed the death, saying in a statement that it "regrets acts of violence in general and in particular those in which the life of an elite sportsman like Amilcar is lost".

It added: "We extend our condolences to the family of Amilcar."

Panama's president Juan Carlos Varela said on Twitter he "strongly condemns the assassination of Amilcar Henriquez".
