Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has revealed he received death threats from Liverpool fans and needed security outside his home following the racism row with Luis Suarez.

Suarez was given an eight-match ban by the Football Association (FA) after being found guilty of misconduct for using insulting words to Evra, which included a reference to the defender's colour, at Anfield in October 2011.

Liverpool came out in support of their player following the decision with the squad wearing T-shirts backing their teammate. In the weeks and months following incident, Evra was on the receiving end of a vicious backlash that included threats aimed towards him and his family.

"Manchester United received so many threatening letters about me," Evra told the club's UTD podcast.

"People said: 'We're in jail, we're Liverpool fans. When we get out, we're going to kill you and your family'.

"For two months, I had security everywhere I went. They were sleeping in front of my house. Everywhere I went, the security followed me. It was a tough time, but I wasn't scared. My family were scared: my wife and brother, but I wasn't.

"I couldn't understand why people hated me so much. They didn't know the truth."
