Paulo Fonseca believes Premier League job ‘will happen’ after failed Tottenham move

Paulo Fonseca expects to manage in the Premier League despite missing out on two jobs recently.

The former Roma coach had agreed a two-year-deal in principle to succeed Jose Mourinho at Tottenham over the course of the summer upon the recommendation of Fabio Paratici but a move broke down as Spurs’ managerial chase descended into farce.

After that move collapsed, former AC Milan manager Genaro Gattuso became a target, only for that move to be called off after a fierce backlash from supporters over the Italian’s previous unsavoury comments on women in football, same-sex marriage and racism.

A three-time title-winner with Shakhtar Donetsk, Fonseca was also interviewed for the Newcastle United job following their October takeover, eventually missing out to Eddie Howe as a replacement for Steve Bruce.

Frequently linked with a move to England and currently out of work, the 49-year-old believes his time in the Premier League will come.

Speaking to Il Romanista, Fonseca said: “Today in England, there are the best teams and the best football in the world.

“At the beginning of the season, I was very close to Tottenham, but that didn’t materialise, as well as with Newcastle. Let’s see in the future; I think it will happen.

“Everyone would love to work in England to experience the fantastic atmosphere there. It’s something you can’t find in another country.”
