Rio Ferdinand believes that Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea "nullified" Manchester City as Pep Guardiola once again faced accusations of "over-thinking" his tactics in the Champions League Final.
Man City went into Saturday's all-English final in Porto as favourites, but a goal from Kai Havertz saw Chelsea win 1-0 to lift the European Cup for the second time in their history - leaving City still searching for their first triumph in the competiton.
Guardiola's striker-less system has worked wonders for City this season, with the club cantering to the Premier League title after a mid-season switch by the Catalan coach.
Raheem Sterling was one of the players to lose out on game time as a result in recent months, but the England forward was a surprise starter against Chelsea as Guardiola also opted for no recognised holding midfielders.
Unfortunately for Guardiola and City, Chelsea quickly adapted to their tactics and exploited space in the middle as Mason Mount split the English champions with a through-ball from deep which Havertz eventually finished.
Guardiola has been accused of "over-thinking" his tactics after frustrating defeats in previous seasons, and that again looks set to be a key topic of discussion.
TV pundit Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United and England defender, told BT Sport: "I think that will be levelled at him. He changed the way they played all season.
"He must have seen something. We all know, tactically, he messes and tinkers about with his team - little nuances, he might see a weakness somewhere.
"But today Tuchel, the way he set his team up, really nullified any threat Man City had.
"They (City) played with two really wide men - Mahrez and Sterling - and they've not done that too often this year. That's maybe one of the areas he got wrong."
