PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor says he will continue to receive full pay despite the crippling impact of the coronavirus pandemic on football finances and the wider economy.

Some clubs have been brought to their knees by the suspension of football, while others face a battle to stay afloat. QPR chief Les Ferdinand told Standard Sport last week they were "close to the edge" despite years of hard work financially stabilising the club.

Top footballers are facing pressure from politicians to take a wage cute, while the Premier League on Friday suggested a 30 per cent reduction in pay across the board to "protect employment throughout the professional game".

The PFA have instead asked clubs to review their own financial situations before making any decisions on players' salaries.

Taylor explained to the Guardian: “What [the players] are saying is that it needs every club in its own locality to work things out for themselves – you can’t have one suit fitting all sizes because there is such a variance in income and expenditure.

“It needs to be round the table with all the facts revealed and then I can assure you that players will come to a position that is mindful about keeping their club alive and in good health as well as their jobs alive.”

Despite this, Taylor has said he continues to receive his full salary, believed to be around £2million.

He added: “The PFA will make donations and the PFA is involved in the players’ charity. At the moment the PFA position is that we will continue to be paying all our staff of over 60 in full.”
