Premier League clubs must offer away fans pitch-side seats from start of 2017/18 season

Standard Sport10 November 2016

The Premier League has announced that from the start of the 2017/18 season, clubs will have to seat at least one block of away fans pitch-side.

This will affect clubs like Sunderland and - if they are promoted - Newcastle who currently seat travelling supporters in the upper tier of their grounds.

The announcemnt came as the Premier League published a definitive report on ticket prices across its 20 clubs, and found the average price this season is £31.

Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore hopes the research, undertaken for the first time, will help 'bust some myths' surrounding the cost of attending matches.

The report found that over 56 per cent of the 12.5million tickets sold cost £30 or less, and that a quarter of all tickets sold are £20 or cheaper.

The findings come in the year top-flight clubs began to cap away ticket prices at £30 for the next three seasons.

In the report, published on the Premier League's website, Scudamore said: "The fans are an integral part of the Premier League.

"Their passion, commitment and support are valued enormously by the players, clubs and the League.

"This research shows how hard the clubs are working to make Premier League football accessible - home and away - and keep their grounds full and vibrant. Clubs are offering tremendous value.

"These figures will go a long way to busting some of the myths perpetrated about the cost of attending Premier League matches and hopefully encourage even more people to attend a live match."
