Premier League: Latest coronavirus tests confirm seven positive Covid-19 results

Tom Doyle21 December 2020

The Premier League has confirmed that seven new positive coronavirus cases have been reported in this week's round of testing.

In the week from December 14-20, the Premier League says that 1,569 players and club staff were tested.

Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.

A Premier League statement read: "No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing."

Premier League fixtures are currently sheduled to continue as planned amid the introduction of stricter Tier 4 lockdown measures following the discovery of a new strain of Covid-19.

Since the 2020/21 season kicked off, over 100 individuals at top-flight clubs have tested positive in 16 rounds of testing.

Newcastle had been due to play Aston Villa on December 4, but the game was postponed after the Magpies were forced to close their training ground following an outbreak of the virus.

Manager Steve Bruce said last week that two players had still not shaken off the effects of the virus.

Some clubs were allowed to reopen stadiums for a maximum of 2,000 fans but most have gone back to playing behind closed doors, including those based in London after the government tightened restrictions in the city last week.
