Premier League spending could top £2billion for the first time during the 2018-19 season, according to football finance experts Deloitte.

Europe saw a record-breaking season of spending when Neymar's €222m (£198m) Barcelona release clause was triggered by Paris Saint-Germain, setting in motion two further nine-figure deals in Ousmane Dembele three weeks later and Philippe Coutinho in the winter window.

English teams, as ever, were leading the way on the continent with a record £1.9bn spent across both summer and winter windows last season.

The standout deals in England included Manchester United's £75m purchase of Romelu Lukaku, Virgil van Dijk leaving Southampton for Liverpool for a similar fee and Alvaro Morata joining Chelsea from Real Madrid for an initial £58m.

United have already spent an estimated £70m on midfielder Fred and full-back Diogo Dalot this week alone, while Manchester City are also expected to spend over £100m as Pep Guardiola looks to further bolster his record-breaking squad.

Revenues were up across the board with a Premier League club on average earning £228m heading into last summer, which was double the figure of just six years previous and £46m up on a year prior.

Over 90 per cent of the increase came from the new bumper TV deal, though projections for the broadcast rights from 2019-2022 are down on the current agreements.

For the first time, we saw five teams from one country enter the Champions League group stage as Chelsea, United, City, Tottenham and Liverpool all impressed.

Five of the Premier League's 'big six', the above plus Arsenal, rank in the world's top 10 for generating revenue with City sitting in 13th but England's top flight remain the most even for money earned.
