Premier League plan show of solidarity with Ukraine over Russian invasion

Premier League clubs will pause for a moment of “reflection and solidarity” before the weekend’s games - in support of Ukraine’s fight against the invading Russian forces.

Football has put on a united front for much of its response to the invasion, with fans applauding Ukrainian players such as Oleksandr Zinchenko and Andriy Yarmolenko at matches since the conflict began.

FIFA has kicked the Russian national team out of its upcoming World Cup play-offs with UEFA taking similar action against the national teams and clubs competing in tournaments such as the Europa League and Women’s Euros.

The upcoming weekend round of matches will see Premier League captains don armbands in the Ukrainian colours of yellow and blue, with the phrase ‘Football Stands Together’ to be prominent inside stadiums across the country.

On Wednesday, a league statement read: “The Premier League and our clubs wholeheartedly reject Russia's actions and will be showing support for the people of Ukraine at all matches this weekend.

“We call for peace and our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted.

“A show of solidarity for Ukraine will be visible at all Premier League matches from Saturday 5 to Monday 7 March.

“This message of solidarity will also be visible to fans around the world across Premier League digital channels. Logos and profiles on those platforms will change to represent the colours of the Ukrainian flag, which will also be displayed across match broadcasts both in the UK and overseas. “
