Arsenal’s shock home defeat to Aston Villa and their lack of transfer activity was on the agenda as Jamie Carragher made his Sky debut alongside Gary Neville on Monday night.

The two former rivals put their differences aside to criticise the North London club for failing to strengthen this summer.

Carragher, who joined Sky's team after retiring at the end of last season said: "There’s only one section of people overspending at Arsenal — the supporters."

Carragher (above), who spent 17 seasons at Liverpool said he felt the Gunners were attempting to panic buy with just two weeks left before the transfer window shuts.

He added: "If Cabaye was that important to Arsenal I think they'd have bought him by now. It feels to me like a panic. If Arsene Wenger was that impressed and wanted Cabaye that much, why not buy him two months ago? What are you waiting for? It feels like a couple of years ago when they brought Mikel Arteta, Per Mertesacker and Santos in late. Santos has been a disaster for them and Mertesacker is not for me, though Arteta's done ok. When you start panicking with transfers towards the end you obviously don't get what you want.

"I'm an ex Liverpool player with nothing to do with Arsenal but they frustrate me. I feel how the supporters are feeling."

His co-pundit Neville echoed his sentiments and added: "There is no single player to answer Arsenal’s problems. They need a big shop."

The duo's performance was well received on Twitter with most agreeing that he had formed an interesting and incisive partnership with Neville.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker meanwhile praised the pair on their first appearance together “Extremely good start for #MNF Great game and enjoyed the interplay and analysis of Neville and Carragher'.

Joey Barton, however, chose to remark on Carragher's voice: “Can someone take the helium of Carragher for the after the match stuff. Dogs all over England standing to attention every time he speaks.."
