Clubs chasing Luis Suarez have missed their chance - Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has insisted that clubs trying to entice Luis Suarez away from Liverpool this summer have missed their opportunity.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with a switch to Real Madrid, while Arsenal were last month rebuffed in a bid for his services.

Suarez was paraded in front of the Anfield faithful ahead of Saturday’s season-opener against Stoke, cooling speculation he was headed for the exit.

And the Liverpool manager has claimed there is not enough time left in the window to replace the 26-year-old, maintaining last season’s 23-goal frontman will remain at the club.

"It's very difficult at this time [for a Suarez bid to succeed]," Rodgers said.

"We are trying to get one or two more quality players in through the door. If we lose Luis at this stage it would be difficult to replace him.

"There might have been a point a few months ago where there was time to do it but with 11 days to go it would be difficult to replace him."

Rodgers has made five additions to his squad over the course of the summer window but failed in pursuits of a selection of highly-regarded talent.

The Liverpool boss sought to benefit from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s widely-publicised move away from Shakhtar Donetsk, but the 24-year-old opted for a switch to Borussia Dortmund, while reports of a move for Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa were ended when he signed a new contract with the La Liga club.

And it now appears the Merseyside outfit have fallen short in their bid to lure Brazilian target Willian, who has passed a medical at Tottenham.

"Over the course of the summer we have been very ambitious in our attempts to improve the team,” said Rodgers.

"Some might say too ambitious - but this is Liverpool Football Club.

"We are trying to get the best players we possibly can. If we can't get them in we just have to move on.

"If you want to claim the league you have to have quality and get the best players you possibly can to help you climb. That is our aim.

"We did some business early on in the window that was very good and if we can finish off in these remaining days and get some players in that can help us, it would end a very good window for us."
