Jose Mourinho insists Jorge Mendes is not trying to drive David de Gea out of Manchester United.

The super-agent is locked in negotiations with United’s board over a new five-year deal that could make De Gea the highest paid goalkeeper in the world.

But with the two sides yet to make a breakthrough, Ed Woodward has had to trigger a one-year option on the Spaniard’s deal to buy United more time to come to an agreement.

Mourinho remains confident De Gea will commit his future to Old Trafford despite interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain – and insists Mendes will not try to convince the keeper to look elsewhere.

The United manager is also represented by the agent and said: “We have the best goalkeeper in the world, obviously the manager wants him to stay, the board wants him to stay and David wants to stay.

“His agent wants the player to do what he wants. He is not the kind of agent who is manipulative like others and try to influence the player.

“His agent lets him think and decide for himself. The point is just to agree the contract that the club wants to give and the player wants to accept.

“I think, and it is just my opinion. They are going to finish.”
