The FA will hand out two-game bans retrospectively to players found guilty of diving from the beginning of the 2017-18 season.

For a player to be charged with ‘Successful Deception of a Match Official’, the on-field decision must directly result in a penalty and or a red card for an opposing player.

Incidents will be reviewed by a panel comprised of an ex-manager, ex-player and an ex-referee, and they watch the footage independently. They must unanimously agree that the offending player has deceived the referee through simulation.

The new rule falls under The FA's Fast Track system, meaning offending players will be disciplined before their next match.

Then Hull winger Robert Snodgrass apologised for diving in a Premier League match against Crystal Palace earlier this season.

The 29-year-old, already on a yellow card, went to ground despite there being no contact with Palace defender Scott Dann, and later apologised.

Snodgrass's penalty put Hull 1-0 up and the match finished 3-3; he later tweeted: "Apologies from my end, it was never a penalty."

He received no punishment despite his confession, but would face a two-game ban under new rules.
