Jamie Vardy believes England can learn from Leicester City’s experiences and bounce-back from their disappointing summer in France.

Following his own return to form – he has scored four goals in his last five games – Vardy aims to take his growing confidence onto the international stage – something he was unable to do at Euro 2016 despite a goal against Wales.

He said: “I don’t think you can explain what happened at the Euros to be honest – it’s strange. It’s not something anyone wanted to happen but it did happen. But no-one expected what Leicester did to happen either but it did. So, sometimes you can’t put your finger on it.

“It’s down to us to keep working hard because you have to keep going. We’ve never struggled when it’s come to qualifying but for some reason it’s not happening in tournaments. There’s got to be something that’s slightly off there. I think we’ve just got to focus to make sure we take the qualifying form into the tournaments.”

England’s task begins in Dortmund tomorrow with a friendly against the world champions ahead of a World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley on Sunday.

But Vardy admits whatever the result it would be unwise to look analyse it too deeply. After all, England beat the Germans 3-2 before Euro 2016, with Vardy on target, and went on to flop in France.

He said: “We will not read too much into it, but we will be going out to try and win it. The more you keep winning, the better you will be as a team and the more settled. So we are definitely going to go for a win. Hopefully we will get it and it will be a good performance and then we move forward from that.

“If we’re all at 100 per cent and all on top of our game we can give any single team in the world a game and we know we can beat them on the day so there’s no harm thinking it can be done. But we know the work has got to be put in and make sure we’ve put it in on the pitch to do it.”
