Jan Vertonghen faces a fight to be fit for Tottenham’s forthcoming matches against Huddersfield Town and Juventus because of the ankle problem he suffered in training last week, prior to the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

Tottenham confirmed on Friday that Vertonghen had returned to training, but having had ankle difficulties before, boss Mauricio Pochettino may decide not to risk him against Huddersfield in the Premier League.

Vertonghen has been one of Spurs’ best players this season and Pochettino wants to give him every chance of recovering for the Juve game on Wednesday, in which a win will take Tottenham into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Toby Alderweireld is once more sidelined with a hamstring injury - less than a month after he returned from a similar problem — and was not expected to be in contention for either of the next two games. Alderweireld, who is in contract dispute with Spurs, is considered a longer-term injury concern than Vertonghen.

If both are absent, Eric Dier is likely to resume his partnership with Davinson Sanchez in central defence. The pair could face Gonzalo Higuain next week, with the Juventus striker still recovering from an ankle injury.

Higuain could miss Juventus’ Serie A game against Lazio tomorrow and their coach Massimiliano Allegri said: “Higuain is not available right now. He has not trained for a few days and we will see if he is available on Saturday.”
