Southampton plan to bid for QPR winger Matt Phillips in the summer.

Phillips has made an impression at Loftus Road in recent weeks with seven assists in 10 matches.

Southampton were interested in buying the Scotland international from Blackpool in 2013 but he joined QPR for £4m instead.

The 24-year-old struggled under previous manager Harry Redknapp but has impressed since Chris Ramsey took charge.

Southampton are huge admirers of the winger and are aware they may be able to get him at a reduced price should Rangers be relegated from the Premier League next month.

Last week, QPR captain Joey Barton praised Phillips for seizing his opportunity.

“Matt has been playing as well as anyone in the League,” said Barton. “He didn’t play that much at the start and every player needs to play to showcase what they’re about.”
