Luke Freeman has labelled Steve McClaren “one of the best managers I’ve played under” after agreeing a new contract to stay at QPR until 2021.

Freeman, 26, has started all of the Rs' games this season as the west Londoners have shaken off a disastrous start to the season to establish themselves as serious contenders for the playoffs.

The playmaker has been crucial in that run of form and Freeman has proven to be an astute signing since joining from Bristol City for just £300,000 in January 2017, scoring 11 goals and providing 18 assists in 82 appearances.

“This feels like home for me,” Freeman said. “I love the club, the fans and I want to help us progress even more now."

As to the influence of McClaren, Freeman added: “He was massive in this decision and is probably one of the best managers I’ve played under. The same goes for his staff.

“I think all the boys here would agree with that – and you can see it given the direction that we’re heading in. It was a tough start to the season, but kicking on like we have done made this decision even easier for me."

Freeman had been targeted by Middlesbrough in the summer and McClaren said: “He is one of the players who attracted a lot of interest from a lot of clubs last summer.

“We resisted that because of what he brings to the team – his goals, his assists, his infectious enthusiasm and his willingness to work.”
