Reading are set to make a £5million offer for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

The 29-year-old wants assurances over his future at White Hart Lane and is set for talks with new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, who admits he is keen to sign a new striker this summer.

Defoe found opportunities limited under Harry Redknapp but still managed 17 goals in all competitions last season.

Reading manager Brian McDermott has already made five signings this summer - Nicky Shorey, Pavel Pogrebnyak, Danny Guthrie, Garath McCleary and Pierce Sweeney.
