Real Madrid were far from convincing but held off a lively RB Leipzig to reach the Champions League quarter-finals tonight.

Much like the first leg, the German side had the better chances but were guilty of poor finishing before Willi Orban’s equaliser on the night after Vinicius Junior had added to Brahim Diaz’s first-leg strike.

Madrid were sluggish in the first half as the likes of Xavi Simons, Orban and Lois Openda were all denied.

Real Madrid increased the tempo in the second half and ultimately did enough to secure qualification for the next round despite several chances missed by their opponents.

Bidding for a record-extending 15th Champions League title, Real took the lead thanks to a Vini strike from a counter attack in the 65th minute.

Orban levelled the score three minutes later with a header to set up a tense final few minutes that included a strike that hit the crossbar by Dani Olmo.

Real are into their fourth consecutive quarter-final, having reached the semi-final in the previous three seasons.
