A former leading referee has described taking charge of Chelsea matches as a "poisoned chalice" and has urged the Premier League and the Blues to have a face-to-face meeting to deal with Jose Mourinho's public criticism of officials.

Mourinho was charged with misconduct relating to his language and/or behaviour by the FA on Monday evening after he was dismissed to the stands at half-time of Chelsea's 2-1 loss against West Ham at Upton Park at the weekend.

The Blues manager allegedly entered referee Jonathan Moss's room during the interval and argued with him over Nemanja Matic's sending off, which occurred minutes before the half-time break, along with Cesc Fabregas' disallowed goal from earlier in the half.

It has also been reported that Mourinho referenced Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger and swore at Moss after initially being invited into the official's room.

The FA also charged Mourinho's assistant Silvino Louro for misconduct for protesting against Matic's red card while both Chelsea and West Ham have been charged for failing to control their players.

Mourinho is currently appealing a £50,000 fine and suspended one-match stadium ban that was handed to him earlier this month after he claimed referees were "afraid" to award his team penalties following the club's home defeat to Southampton.

With the Portuguese coach landing himself in yet more trouble, Keith Hackett - former general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board - has urged the Premier League to meet with Chelsea chiefs to resolve the recent "public spats" involving Mourinho.

In a blog written for the You Are The Ref website, Hackett said: "Sadly the image of the Premier League is being tarnished by the actions of the manager of Chelsea, Jose Mourinho.

"He appears to be one very unhappy person who, frankly, is using referees as a scapegoat for the poor performances of his team

"Moss was appointed to what appears to be a poisoned chalice when it comes to Chelsea - not the easiest team to control.

"For a number of years with Jose Mourinho in charge, Chelsea have been a difficult team to referee.

"It’s my firm belief that there needs to be an urgent summit meeting between Jose Mourinho, Bruce Buck the chairman of Chelsea, Richard Scudamore, the chief executive of the Premier League, and Mike Riley, general manager of PGMOL.

"The public spats involving the manager of Chelsea need to be dealt with immediately in a face-to-face meeting."
