As Gareth Southgate's England squad prepare to face Spain with the threat of Nations League relegation hanging over them, they can take inspiration from Gary Lineker's exploits at the Santiago Bernabeu 31 years over.

It has been over three decades since England last scored in an away game against Spain. In the four games since La Roja have triumphed every time with a cumulative scoreline of 6-0.

However, that game in 1987 saw Lineker score all four in a 4-2 friendly win for the Three Lions in Madrid. A haul at a venue no doubt made sweeter for Lineker as he was playing for Barcelona at the time and had scored a hat-trick against Real Madrid, at Camp Nou, less than three weeks earlier.

Lineker had two before the half-hour mark, first latching on to Glenn Hoddle's arcing cross towards the back post to head home before tucking home Terry Butcher's knockdown minutes later.

Lineker completed his hat-trick within two minutes of the restart, again finding himself in the right place at the right time to head into an empty net after Stephen Hodge's effort was saved.

He notched his fourth on 57 minutes as he latched onto Peter Beardsley's smart pass, cutting through two Spain defenders, to beat Andoni Zubizarreta once again.

It was Linker's third of five hat-trick for England and the first of two times the striker netted four times in an England game, repeating the feat against Malaysia four years later.

It was a 54th birthday to remember for manager Bobby Robson.
