Rio Ferdinand has called on Liverpool to follow in the footsteps of club legend Jamie Carragher and issue an apology to ex-Manchester United defender Patrice Evra over their response to Luis Suarez's racism ban.

Suarez was handed an eight-game ban in 2011 after it was found that he had used racist language towards Evra during a Manchester United vs Liverpool game.

After the striker was found guilty his Liverpool team-mates made a naive statement of support by warming up ahead of a Premier League game at Wigan wearing 'Suarez, 7' T-Shirts. Speaking on Sky Sports alongside Evra on Monday, then Liverpool vice-captain offered an apology for how the club responded to the situation.

"There is no doubt we made a massive mistake, that was obvious," said Carragher.

Evra's former team-mate Ferdinand, while praising Carragher for his apology, says Evra deserves something from the club as a whole given there has been no show of remorse in the eight years since.

"That’s eight years late, eight years late," Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

"Testament to Jamie Carragher for apologising, eight years after the incident.

"I was there on the pitch. At the end of the day, it’s bigger than Jamie Carragher, it’s the club.

"Liverpool let themselves down that day, wearing t-shirts in support of someone who’s been accused of a racist comment. Yet, eight years on and still the apology hasn’t come from Liverpool in that sense."
