Rio Ferdinand doubts whether QPR can bounce back from relegation at the first attempt.

Rangers are looking to make an immediate return to the Premier League but Ferdinand does not expect his former club to challenge for promotion this season.

“The best they can hope for is to consolidate in the Championship and then push the season after,” he said. “It will be a hard season for them.

“They are going to lose Charlie Austin and Leroy Fer and they have already lost Steven Caulker. So there is a lot to do for them.”

QPR start with a trip to Charlton on Saturday, where manager Chris Ramsey hopes to have Austin and Fer available despite admitting the pair are likely to leave before the transfer window closes. Ferdinand believes Ramsey is the right man to oversee the rebuilding job at Loftus Road.

Speaking at BT Sport’s Premier League launch, Ferdinand said: “He did a great job at Spurs and he has got the credentials to bring through young talent.”
