Roller-coaster night for Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil as he is booed off

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil picked up the award for German Footballer of the Year last night but ended the evening being jeered off the pitch.

Ozil, who has been struggling for form, was honoured in a ceremony before Germany defeated Chile 1-0 in Stuttgart.

He set up the only goal, rolling the ball for Mario Gotze to score but was then whistled by supporters when he was brought off in the 89th minute.

Germany general manager Oliver Bierhoff said: “At the time, with the score at 1-0, I did not understand the whistles. It is a pity that a player like Mesut is singled out.”

The hosts struggled for much of the match and captain Philipp Lahm said: “That was a lucky win.”
