Notts County goalkeeper Roy Carroll lined up against Coventry on Saturday – less than 18 hours after featuring in Northern Ireland’s 2-0 defeat to Romania on Friday night.

The former Manchester United man played 90 minutes in Bucharest – conceding twice - as Michael O'Neill’s side fell to defeat for the first time in four matches.

Carroll was kept busy on Friday night, saving six shots before being named Vauxhall’s Northern Ireland man of the match.

But the 37-year-old didn’t fancy excusing himself from Notts County’s League One clash at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon, and started the 1,700-mile journey back to the Midlands to play his second match in 24 hours.

Shaun Derry’s Notts County side were hoping to bounce back from defeat to Walsall last time out, as they travelled to the struggling Sky Blues.

According to BBC Radio Nottingham’s Colin Slater, Carroll was back in London at 7am before racing to Coventry.
